In the city of Nagaa Hammadi, one of Egypt’s largest solar-and-storage projects is has reached full commercial operations. Combining a 1.1 GW solar power plant with a 100 MW / 200 MWh battery storage system, Obelisk supports Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions while marking a new step in EDF power solutions’ long-standing commitment to the country.
Along the Nile, Obelisk powers Egypt’s energy transition
Following the course of the Nile through Upper Egypt, the landscape is shaped by the river that has connected people and communities for centuries. Not far from Luxor, a city renowned for its rich historical heritage, Nagaa Hammadi is now home to a project looking firmly towards the future: Obelisk, a hybrid solar-and-storage facility.
Now fully operational, Obelisk delivers low-carbon electricity to the Egyptian grid under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
Developed by a consortium comprising Scatec, Norfund, the National Bank of Egypt and EDF power solutions, the project has reached full commercial operations, marking a major milestone for renewable energy in the country.
Combining generation and flexibility
Beyond its scale, Obelisk stands out through the combination of two complementary technologies. Alongside the solar power plant, the project incorporates a battery energy storage system with a capacity of 200 MWh and a power output of 100 MW which allows the project to export electricity at peak load times.
A project supporting Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions
Obelisk forms part of Egypt’s ambition to reach 42 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. By combining large-scale solar generation with battery storage, the project will supply electricity to the national grid while supporting the country’s growing renewable energy portfolio.
For EDF power solutions, Obelisk also represents a new milestone in a long-standing relationship with Egypt. The company already operates two solar assets within the Benban solar power plant and is the largest shareholder of KarmSolar, a leading solar utility company in the country.
The upcoming commissioning of Obelisk marks a proud milestone for EDF power solutions in Egypt. This project is a new beginning for EDF power solutions in Egypt and a first successful partnership with Scatec, recently extended to a 900 MW wind project.
