EDF power solutions, through its subsidiary Luminus, inaugurates this Tuesday, September 1, 2026, its battery storage facility site, at Lixhe, in Belgium, an investment of €160 million. With a power output of 150 MW and a capacity of 600 MWh, this installation becomes the largest battery storage facility in Wallonia. It marks a significant step into the energy transition by enabling electricity to be stored when abundantly available and feed back into the grid when demand increases.
A major step for the energy transition in Wallonia
With 150 MW of power and 600 MWh of storage capacity, equivalent to four hours of discharge at full power, the Navagne battery storage facility marks a turning point for the flexibility of the Belgian electricity system. It provides a concrete response to one of the major challenges of the energy transition: storing surplus electricity generated during sunny or windy days and releasing it when demand increases. This flexibility helps smooth out peaks during congestion periods and compensates when production falls short of demand.
The facility is directly connected to Elia’s high-voltage grid. Newelec, a subsidiary of Luminus, handled the entire medium-voltage distribution network (33 kV) on site and supervises the electrical installations.
For Luminus, a subsidiary of EDF power solutions and leader in onshore wind and hydroelectric power, this project illustrates one conviction: the development of renewable energies must go hand in hand with new flexibility solutions to ensure a more stable and resilient electricity system.
A new asset for supply security
Located near the Lixhe hydroelectric power plant, the battery storage facility becomes an additional link in a more flexible, more robust energy system, better prepared for the increasing electrification of uses, the preferred way to reduce CO2 emissions. The facility will contribute to the daily balancing of the grid and to strengthening Belgium’s supply security.

To bring this large-scale project to fruition, Luminus partnered with the investment fund I4B – The Belgian Infrastructure Fund, a long-term partner committed to infrastructure that accelerates the energy transition.
