EDF power solutions’ first transmission asset in Brazil reaches commercial operation phase

EDF power solutions commissions the Açu Transmissora high voltage transmission project, marking its first step in the electric power transmission segment in the Brazilian market. Located in Rio de Janeiro, the project is now part of the basic network of the National Interconnected System and is the first transmission asset of the EDF group in Latin America.

The Açu Transmissora system consists of a stepping-down substation and a 40km transmission line. The whole infrastructure enables the safe transmission of electric power to support the industrial growth of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Due to its significance, Açu Transmissora has been recognized as a strategic enterprise for the state of Rio de Janeiro and deemed to be of public utility. The project contributes to the energy supply needed specifically for the consolidation and expansion of the industrial and logistical operations of the Port of Açu, an important driver of economic growth for the state.

Açu Transmissora has an important role into the mitigation of transmission bottlenecks of the National Interconnected System, which is essential to accommodate large consumers such as data centers and the production of low-carbon hydrogen.

Alongside the implementation of the asset, EDF power solutions established an environmental program in partnership with Reserva Caruara. The project aims to restore the coastal forest in an area of approximately 30,000 sq meters and to utilize native species produced in the reserve’s nursery, like the Brazilian cherry or the Brazilian peppertree.

André Salgado, CEO of EDF power solutions Brazil said: “The commissioning of Açu Transmissora is an important milestone with a new asset in EDF power solutions’ portfolio in Brazil. Expanding our presence in the electric sector infrastructure reinforces our commitment to Brazil energy transition. Moreover, Açu Transmissora consolidates our expertise in high-voltage projects, entering a new segment of the energy sector”
