In Brazil, in the Seridó region of Paraíba, the 85 wind turbines of Serra do Seridó rise like landmarks on the horizon. As the largest wind farm developed by EDF power solutions in South America, it now supports the expansion of sustainable agriculture initiatives led by local communities.
In the heart of Brazil’s semi-arid Nordeste region, the wind turbines of Serra do Seridó shape the landscapes of Junco do Seridó, Santa Luzia, Salgadinho and Assunção. Developed by EDF power solutions as its first project in the state of Paraíba, the 480 MW wind farm generates enough renewable electricity to supply the equivalent of 1.5 million Brazilian homes.
A project rooted in the Seridó region
Between 2021 and 2024, the wind farm was developed in two major phases. The first saw the installation of 44 turbines (242 MW), followed by 41 additional turbines (237.8 MW) in the second phase. Phases 1 and 2 were commissioned in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
In this rugged terrain, teams faced significant logistical challenges to build access roads, adapt local infrastructure and connect the project to the electricity grid. The second phase notably required the construction of a substation and 40 kilometres of medium-voltage transmission lines.
In total, nearly 2,000 workers were mobilised throughout the project, with more than 30% recruited from neighbouring communities, further strengthening the project’s local roots.
Advancing local development and sustainable agriculture across the region
In this region, where family farming is the backbone of the local economy yet remains vulnerable to prolonged periods of drought, EDF power solutions supports rural communities in strengthening their resilience and diversifying their sources of income. The aim is to ensure that the wind farm serves as a driver of sustainable development for the region.

Beyond renewable energy generation, EDF power solutions helps to foster local development through agricultural training, educational initiatives and support for community-led projects. In 2024, a call for projects focused on sustainable agriculture led to the selection of eight initiatives, rolled out in 2025 and benefiting more than 280 people. From livestock farming and water management to agricultural equipment and technical training, these projects illustrate how the energy transition can become a catalyst for sustainable development and socio-economic empowerment across the Seridó region.
